Curious? We too.
lets start!
Q: Good morning, Dr. Kaholi. I noticed a bulge in my left leg. When I stretch my foot and touch the bulge, I feel a strong pain, like that of a thorn stuck there. When I stand on my foot or walk normally, I do not feel the pain.
Dr. Kaholi: Since when have you noticed a bump?
Q: The truth is I noticed the pain for the first time about a month ago, but I realized it was just a thorn, and it did not particularly bother me when I stood or walked. But now I noticed the bump and the sharp pain.
Dr. Kaholi: I need to see exactly what it is. Can you please send me a picture of him?
Q: I’m sending you some pictures. Only when I stretch my foot do I feel the pain.
Dr. Kaholi: Yes, I see it. From the photos, the bulge appears to be sitting on one of the only tendons. Have you consulted an orthopedist?
Q: Yes, I have, and he had sent me to a foot specialist, who fitted me with a customized prescription foot orthotic for my left shoe.
Dr. Kaholi: Ok. So here lies a problem.
Q: What, really? I did not know! I invested so much money on it, not to mention all the times I had to travel to him for fittings……
Dr. Kaholi: I am sorry about it, but customized prescription foot orthotics are problematic, and I will try to explain it. Very few people have all the parts of their feet contacting the ground through the shoe in an even and perfect way. We have areas in the feet with which we push down more and less, such as the toes: with some toes we put more pressure to the ground and with some toes not enough.
Therefore, the energy distribution when the feet contact the ground is not even, resulting in some pathological change in the feet, such as tendonitis or a wart, like in your case. You can detect it in the sole of the shoe: certain areas of the shoe sole would be more worn out compared to the rest of it. In those areas which look more worn out we can conclude that the pressure we put there with the foot is greater and out of balance.
Q: Ow wow! I see what you say. So, the foot orthotics they customized especially for my foot do not solve the problem?
Dr. Kaholi: Customized prescription foot orthotics magnify the problem in the foot. The customized prescription foot orthotics do not bring us back to the healthy state of even and balanced pressures. They actually perpetuate the problem created in the foot as a result of our wrong way of walking and standing, and make it permanent.
Therefore, the customized prescription foot orthotics not only do not fix anything, but because they do not help us to correct the foot posture, the problem will be aggravated. Things are never static, and if we do not help to correct the posture of the feet and try to get back to the healthy balanced state, then the situation will just deteriorate further.
Q: What do you suggest?
Dr. Kaholi: I suggest you purchase orthotics from professional and quality shoe companies, like a few possible German shoe companies I have good experience with, and I can forward you a list of their names. Their orthotics are not expansive and they can help restore the right posture of the foot and reduce the ability to continue and make mistakes.
I also suggest you come to the clinic, so I can check and instruct you about the mistakes you might be doing standing and walking, and help you to be aware of them and correct them. But first, you can order the orthotics from the manufacturers through the internet and have a relief from the pain and discomfort.
Q: Thank you, Dr. Kaholi. I will be very happy to receive your list of shoe manufactures recommended by you.
After a week:
Q: Hello, Dr. Kaholi, the orthotics I ordered have arrived, and the truth is that I have been walking with them for a couple of days and I am a bit sore.
Dr. Kaholi: Indeed, it is OK and rather expectable at the very beginning, because the orthotics are actually correcting the mistaken way you got used to walk for a long time. Give it another couple of days, and this will sort itself out.
five days later:
Q: Dr. Kaholi, this is unbelievable! Thank you so much! It feels like in a different world, and such a relief. I spent so much money and hassle with those customized prescription foot orthotics, and here I have regular quality orthotics which do not cost much at all, and they ended up as the ones solving the problem! I just do not understand why they have no idea about it.
Dr. Kaholi: Indeed, a problematic issue, but at least you got to know about it. Now that you feel better walking, it would be very beneficial if I could see you to check and point out to you your posture mistakes for you to be aware of them and intentionally correct them.
For example, you might be leaning too much on your ankle while the grip of the toes on the ground is too weak. So slowly and gradually, with awareness of the way you place your foot on the ground, you will be able to prevent further problems.
